Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches worldwide on 23 Oct 2026, but some store pages show 22 Oct because they display the unlock in UTC or local store time rather than your local calendar date. The important part for buyers is simple: check the exact platform, edition and region before you pay, because the Vault upgrade and some bonuses have strict rules.
Release date and unlock times
Official Call of Duty and Xbox posts point to a global launch on Friday, 23 Oct 2026 across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. The confusion comes from store timing, not from different versions of the game launching on different days.
The PlayStation Store lists the PS5 release at 23 Oct 2026, 04:00 AM UTC. The Steam store also shows an event card saying the game releases on Friday, 23 October at 4:00 AM UTC, even though the European Steam store page itself shows 22 Oct 2026 as the release date.
In plain English, 4:00 AM UTC can still be the evening of 22 Oct in parts of North America, while it is already 23 Oct in Europe and later regions. If you see 22 Oct on Steam or another store, that usually reflects store time or UTC display rather than a separate early launch.

Editions and prices
For most players, the Standard edition is the safe pick unless you specifically want the Operator packs, Signature Weapon Collection, BlackCell season and DMZ extras. The dearer version is easier to justify if you know you will use those extras from day one; if not, the base edition avoids paying upfront for items you may not care about.
What is new
The official setup is war on the Korean Peninsula after North Korea launches an invasion that threatens to destabilise the world. PlayStation’s game page adds that a young squad of South Korean soldiers is fighting on collapsing front lines while Captain Price runs an off-book mission from the shadows.
That tells buyers two useful things about what’s new in Modern Warfare 4. First, this is a fresh conflict and setting rather than a minor reshuffle of a familiar map pool. Second, Activision is clearly positioning the campaign as a major part of the package, which matters because Campaign Early Access starts a full week before launch for eligible digital buyers.
DMZ also looks more central than a side mode this time. The official preorder page gives it its own early access date, 20 Oct 2026, and the Vault Edition includes a DMZ Deployment Bonus with an extra Active Duty slot plus a kit of starting items.

Early access, subscriptions and pre-order bonuses
Modern Warfare 4 early access is split into two parts. Campaign Early Access starts on 16 Oct 2026 for players who preorder or prepurchase the Standard Digital Edition or Vault Edition on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PS5, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. DMZ Early Access starts on 20 Oct 2026 according to the official preorder page.
Activision notes that actual play time can vary because of outages and time zone differences. That matters if you are waiting for the exact moment a mode opens in your region, especially since official messaging has been clearer on campaign timing than on the precise DMZ unlock hour.
Pre-order any digital edition and you get the Inner Circuit Weapon Blueprint, Hunter Killer Operator Skin and Gilded Pearl Camo Pack, with some items usable immediately in Black Ops 7 or Warzone on supported platforms. A later Call of Duty blog post also specifically mentions the Inner Circuit M4 Weapon Blueprint, so if store wording looks slightly different, check the official preorder page for the fuller bonus list.
As for subscriptions, Modern Warfare 4 is launching as a standalone release. The October Call of Duty blog post says Game Pass Ultimate subscribers keep access to older Call of Duty titles including Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare III, but Modern Warfare 4 is not named as included at launch.
Preload, file size and PC requirements
On PC, Modern Warfare 4 PC requirements are already clear enough to make a buying decision. The official Steam data lists 115 GB available space at launch and specifically says that space needs to be on an SSD. Recommended graphics move up to RX 6600 XT, RTX 3060 or Intel Arc B580.
There are also two easy-to-miss hard requirements. The Steam page says Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 must be enabled to play some or all parts of the game, and it confirms kernel-level RICOCHET Anti-Cheat. If your PC has those features disabled, check your firmware settings before launch rather than discovering the problem on release day. If you are unsure how account tie-ins and PC launcher checks usually work, our explainer on PC ports now ask for a console account. What that means gives the general picture.
Internet needs matter on every platform too, not just PC. Activision Support says the game uses texture streaming across all modes, and that a continuous internet connection is required for Multiplayer, including Private Matches, and for DMZ.

Before you buy
Start with platform. Modern Warfare 4 platforms are PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. Xbox Wire also calls out Xbox Play Anywhere on Xbox storefront purchases, which is useful if you want the Xbox console and Xbox on PC version under the same ecosystem.
Then check edition rules. The Modern Warfare 4 Vault Edition is digital-only on all platforms, the physical Standard Edition is console-only, and physical copies cannot be upgraded later. If you think you may want the bonus content but are not ready to commit now, the Digital Standard plus later $30 Vault upgrade is the flexible route.
Finally, check region and account details on the store page before paying, especially for digital bonuses and any loyalty offer. If you buy wallet credit first, make sure it matches the account region; our guide to regions, currencies, and why a code says no covers the usual mistake, and platform-specific help is in our Steam redeem guide.
Worth it at launch?
On the facts alone, the base price is what you would expect from a new big-budget release, and the Standard edition looks like the better value for most people. You still get the full base game and, if bought before launch in digital form, the key early-access and pre-order benefits without paying extra for cosmetic and DMZ-focused bonuses you may never use.
The Vault Edition makes more sense for committed Call of Duty players who know they want the Operator packs, Signature Weapon Collection, BlackCell season and DMZ boost. The loyalty discount can improve that case, but it has conditions: it applies at participating digital storefronts, requires owning and having played a qualifying Call of Duty title on the same platform account, and on some services there are subscription-specific eligibility notes.
What nobody can honestly tell you before full release is how strong the campaign will be, how balanced multiplayer and DMZ will feel, how stable servers will be at launch, or how well each platform version will perform under pressure. If you are mainly interested in competitive modes, or your PC may struggle with Secure Boot, TPM 2.0 or the SSD requirement, waiting for post-launch reports is the sensible move.
