What the latest snapshot adds

The October 20 Java build adds Packed Ice Bricks, made from a two-by-two arrangement of Packed Ice. The set includes slabs, stairs, walls and Chiseled Packed Ice, with the shaped variants also available through the Stonecutter. Builders can experiment with a frozen roofline before committing to a larger design.

There is also an Adventure advancement, What Goes Around Comes Around, for defeating a Frostbite with an Ice Ball. That gives survival-minded testers a specific combat objective alongside the building additions. This article explains Mojang’s published testing notes, rather than reporting hands-on results.

The announcement is part of a sequence, not a complete feature list that appeared overnight. Mojang’s testing roundup groups the initial caves and mobs, the October 13 additions, and October 20’s decorative blocks and ambient sounds separately. If you skipped the earlier tests, the sections below explain the changes that will matter on your first visit.

What changes underground

Ice Caves generate beneath colder Overworld biomes. Packed Ice and Calcite make up much of the terrain, while ores sit in Stone and Deepslate pockets. Ice Crystals provide light; icicles can injure creatures when they fall or when something lands on them. Treat the ceiling as part of your route planning, rather than concentrating only on the floor.

The Frostbite is a zombie variant that can alternate between close-range attacks and throwing Ice Balls. Its melee attacks apply Freezing. Leather Armor protects against freezing damage, but does not prevent or clear the effect itself. Our practical recommendation is to test your equipment and escape route in a disposable world before treating either as a reliable survival plan.

Brittle Ice, introduced in Snapshot 4, adds another reason to watch your footing. It starts cracking under players or mobs and eventually breaks, although Frostbites can cross it safely. In the wild it appears in Ice Cave crevasses. You can collect it with Silk Touch or create it using water flowing onto Blue Ice. That combination suggests interesting obstacle courses, but first try a small section with a safe landing underneath.

Snapshot 4 also introduced Jukebox playlists. Put a single Chest, Trapped Chest or Copper Chest variant directly above the Jukebox: it plays the Music Discs in slot order, skips other contents and loops. Ejecting the current disc moves to the next available one. A compact test setup is a better starting point than rebuilding a whole music room around an unfamiliar feature.

Choose the right testing version

Bedrock players have a different build: Beta & Preview 26.70.21, also dated October 20. Its notes list Preview for Xbox, PlayStation, Windows and iOS, with the Android beta available through Google Play. Nintendo Switch is not in that testing-access list. Owning Minecraft on one device is not a reason to assume that device has the same testing route as another.

The latest Bedrock notes also change gameplay details: players can fall into caves beneath crevasses when Brittle Ice breaks, Frostbites no longer naturally spawn underground outside Ice Caves, and Redstone Dust can extend Freezing potions. These are edition-specific notes, so do not use a Java detail as an exact specification for a Bedrock experiment.

Mojang’s edition comparison distinguishes the dedicated Preview app from Android’s beta opt-in. That distinction matters when looking for instructions: identify the edition and device first, then follow its official testing route. A guide written for Java’s Launcher will not be the right installation guide for a phone or console.

How to try it safely

01
Back up an existing Java world From Singleplayer, select the world, choose Edit, then Make Backup. Minecraft creates a dated ZIP file; Open Backups Folder lets you find it. Do this before testing an existing save. Our recommendation is still to leave a treasured world untouched and create a fresh, clearly named test world instead.
02
Select the correct Java installation For Java Edition, open the Minecraft Launcher and enable snapshots in the Installations tab. Check the selected version before starting. This guide describes Snapshot 5; if a newer snapshot appears, read its notes first instead of assuming every detail here still applies.
03
Give the session one purpose Choose a small goal: compare a few building shapes, practice a fight, or plan a short route. Keep notes on what you expected and what actually happened. A focused trial makes it easier to decide whether you want another test session or would rather wait.
04
Record problems clearly Use Mojang’s bug tracker for faults and its feedback channel for suggestions. We suggest including your edition, exact version and the steps that reproduce the problem, rather than only saying something does not work.
⚠️
A snapshot is not the finished update
Testing versions can corrupt worlds. Keep backups and use a separate save folder from your main worlds. These features belong to an upcoming game drop, not your normal installation; check your edition and build before opening a save.

What is still unknown

The official pages reviewed here do not give a final release date for this game drop. They also cannot establish how polished the finished experience will feel, or how later changes will affect a build you design today. We recommend waiting if your priority is a dependable shared world rather than giving feedback on unfinished features.

If you are choosing what to play while waiting, our Fortnitemares 2026 gameplay guide covers another current update.
