Guardians of the Galaxy Switch 2: price, saves and download checks

The Encore Edition launches November 5 on Switch 2. Check its $39.99 price, missing save transfers, download-required physical copy and performance targets.

Overview

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy: Encore Edition launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5, 2026, bringing the single-player adventure to the hardware as a local game rather than the original Switch's cloud stream. The important buying checks are straightforward: earlier saves do not transfer, and the physical Game-Key Card still requires a substantial download. Here is what the official launch information confirms before you start or buy another copy.

Release date and availability

November 5 is the worldwide release date for both digital and physical versions. The US Nintendo listing shows the digital game at US$39.99; its earlier preorder discount is no longer shown. If an old search result still advertises a preorder offer, use the price displayed by your regional eShop when you purchase.

No title-specific worldwide unlock hour was supplied in the official material checked for this guide. Nintendo says publishers choose eShop release times, and its usual release windows have exceptions. That makes a regional store listing a better check than converting a guessed midnight into your time zone, especially if your console still reports that the software cannot be played.

Price, formats and included content

01
Digital Encore Edition The US Nintendo eShop price is US$39.99. The publisher also announces a €39.99 launch price; other currencies should be checked in the matching regional store. This is the complete game for Switch 2, not an upgrade add-on for the older cloud release.
02
Physical Encore Edition The publisher confirms a Game-Key Card release. Choose this format if you want a physical card, while budgeting for the download and keeping the card available whenever you play. Check the package and local seller for the actual regional price and required free space.

The package includes the original base game, its previously released digital content and five new glam rock outfits, one each for Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket and Groot. There is no need to seek a more expensive edition just to obtain those five costumes. Compare the two formats on convenience and the actual local total, rather than treating the boxed version as an installation-free alternative.

What changes on Switch 2

This is the existing Guardians adventure adapted for Switch 2, not a sequel or a newly announced story campaign. You play as Star-Lord and direct the team through combat, exploration and conversation. The original Switch release used cloud streaming and needed a persistent high-speed connection; Encore Edition instead gives Nintendo players a locally installed version for TV, tabletop and handheld play.

Eidos-Montréal added mouse controls for menus and aiming. Gyroscope support lets you steer the Milano and guide Peter during sliding and zero-gravity sequences. These are useful reasons to inspect the control options when you begin, but do not assume every action uses motion controls or that one control scheme will suit everyone in every scene.

Announced performance targets
TV Quality1440p at 30 fps
TV Performance1080p at 40 fps
Handheld30 fps; resolution not specified in the FAQ
HDRSupported; compatible display required

Those figures are developer targets, not results from testing for this guide. In particular, Performance mode is not a promise of 60 fps or a guarantee that every scene holds 40 fps. If consistent frame delivery is your main reason for buying again, look for testing of the current Switch 2 build before committing.

Saves, subscriptions and existing owners

The publisher confirms that save data cannot transfer from other versions or platforms. Plan to begin a new playthrough rather than resume an unfinished campaign from another copy. No free or paid owner-upgrade route is announced in the checked Encore Edition material, so do not purchase an older version expecting it to unlock this release.

Nintendo lists Save Data Cloud support, with a Nintendo Switch Online membership required for that backup feature. Cloud backup is different from importing progress from the old Cloud Version or another platform. The product listing sells Encore Edition as a standalone game, not as a Nintendo Switch Online catalog inclusion; the membership badge is not a substitute for the game purchase.

Storage and system requirements

Before installing
Required systemNintendo Switch 2
Nintendo listing46.3 GB in the US and UK
Publisher estimateApproximately 50 GB
Storage optionsSystem memory or microSD Express
Physical setupInternet download and first launch; keep the card inserted

The current Nintendo pages show 46.3 GB, while the publisher’s FAQ rounds the requirement to approximately 50 GB. Treat the Nintendo figure as the current listing, not a lifetime storage cap: check the download prompt and leave room for updates. This guide concerns a Switch 2 release, so PC minimum and recommended specifications do not apply; the original PC version is a separate purchase.

A Game-Key Card does not contain the full game data. Nintendo requires an internet connection and sufficient system memory or microSD Express storage to download it, followed by an online first launch. After that, the card must remain inserted to start the game, but the card’s startup process can work offline. Buying the box therefore does not solve a lack of download access before a trip.

Before you buy

01
Match the exact platform Look for Nintendo Switch 2 and Encore Edition on the product page or box. A listing for the original Switch Cloud Version is a different product. The original game also remains on PlayStation, Xbox and PC; those listings do not imply that the Encore extras are included.
02
Check your regional listing Use the currency, languages and format shown for your intended purchase. Do not use a US price as a promise of what you will pay elsewhere. If buying a digital code, verify its account-region restrictions before paying.
03
Decide whether replaying makes sense If you already finished the story, consider whether portable local play, the control options and costumes justify another purchase. If you are midway through it elsewhere, finishing that playthrough first may be more practical than restarting here.
04
Budget storage across new games Check free space before adding another large installation. Keep a shortlist of games you actually plan to play soon, rather than discovering at download time that your console cannot fit all of your launch purchases.

If you are choosing between this week’s Switch 2 ports, the separate Stellar Blade Switch 2 launch guide covers that game’s DLC and cartridge checks. Compare the requirements for each title individually: the same console logo does not tell you whether a particular physical release includes the game data.

⚠️
Prepare the physical copy before traveling
Download and launch a Game-Key Card purchase while online, then pack the card. A box alone is not enough to start playing away from an internet connection.

Prepare digital play for travel

For a digital purchase, make sure its virtual game card is loaded on the Switch 2 you will take with you. Nintendo requires an internet connection for the first start after loading a virtual game card; later starts can work offline. Using an online license without loading the card instead requires an online check. Download the software and start it at home before relying on it during travel; a HOME Menu icon alone does not prove it is ready.

If you move digital games between consoles, check which system currently holds the virtual game card before leaving. Nintendo’s family lending feature is also supported on this title, but lending is not simultaneous ownership of two copies. Treat the purchase account, the loaded game and the local save as separate things: solving one access issue does not move your progress from a different version.

Worth buying at launch?

The clearest audience is someone who wants this single-player story on Switch 2 and values playing it locally in handheld mode. Existing owners have a narrower decision: the new controls and costumes are extras around a game they may already know, not a reason to assume a new adventure awaits. Choose the format you prefer only after checking its setup requirements.

This is a guide to official launch information, not a hands-on review. It cannot establish actual battery life, loading times or how consistently the announced performance modes run. Waiting is sensible if those measurements matter more to you than playing now, or if you would rather finish an existing save than start again.
