Metro Redux’s next-gen update reached consoles on October 29, 2026, refreshing Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux. Before reinstalling, check the edition you own and the save warning below: a free upgrade is not a promise that every old purchase or campaign transfers unchanged.

The changes announced by 4A Games include sharper textures, revised lighting and shadows, improved animation and Xbox controller impulse-trigger feedback. Xbox Ally and Ally X optimisation is also part of the update. These are developer descriptions, not the results of our own performance testing; the screenshots here are official promotional captures, not side-by-side benchmarks.
PLAION explicitly says this is neither a new remake nor a move onto the current version of the 4A Engine. Ray tracing is not included. Treat the release as a reason to revisit games you already want to play, rather than evidence that their technology now matches a completely new production.

Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG received the update on October 22; Windows Store followed on October 29. Japan’s release is scheduled for November, with availability there still being finalised.
PLAION’s update FAQ qualifies the free offer as covering most existing owners, warning that some versions may be incompatible. If your library presents a full-price purchase instead of an upgrade, stop and check that exact edition with platform support. Paying again is not a sensible troubleshooting step. Keep the original receipt and the name of the edition visible so support can identify the entitlement rather than guess from a screenshot of the cover.
If you are halfway through a campaign, decide whether you want to finish that run before moving. Record your chapter, difficulty and current installation version, and preserve any available backup before replacing files. Do not delete your only old copy merely because the newer game launches successfully. Test the specific continuation you care about before treating a migration as complete.
On Steam, resolve a Cloud synchronisation warning before launching. If the local and cloud files conflict, compare their timestamps with when you actually played. Do not simply select whichever looks newest without checking that context. If progress is missing on another PC, the original machine may still contain the intended save. This is general Steam Cloud guidance, not a guarantee that an incompatible save can be converted.
The distinction between owning an upgrade and retaining a campaign also matters in other releases. Our Conan Exiles Enhanced save and upgrade checklist covers a separate migration; its rules should not be assumed to apply to Metro.

For a PS5 display check, open Settings, then Screen and Video, then Video Output. Review the connected HDMI device information and 120 Hz Output option. Sony says the latter needs both a compatible display and a supporting game; turn it off if it causes output problems. A console menu offering 120 Hz does not establish that every scene in a game runs at 120fps.
Sony’s general upgrade procedure is to sign in with the owning account, open the relevant game hub and review the upgrade offer before downloading. For an eligible disc upgrade, a disc-equipped PS5 is required, the disc and account regions must match, and the disc must remain inserted whenever you play. PS4 games redeemed through PlayStation Plus are not upgrade-eligible unless an exception is stated. These are platform rules, not confirmation that every Metro disc or subscription copy qualifies.
If both versions are in your PS5 library, Sony says you can open the game’s options in Game Library and select which version to download or play. Check that selection before comparing graphics. A familiar title screen alone is a poor way to tell whether you launched the old installation or its replacement.
Xbox Play Anywhere covers participating digital games owned through the Xbox or Windows Store, with the same Microsoft account providing access on supported Xbox, Windows PC and handheld devices. Its policy includes shared progress, add-ons and achievements. That does not turn a Steam purchase into a Microsoft licence, and the Metro announcement does not establish a disc-to-PC entitlement. Check the Play Anywhere label and the owning account before purchasing a second copy.
Do not confuse cross-device support with the separate old-save warning. First establish that your account can install the relevant edition; then check what progress actually appears. If you are buying mainly to move an existing campaign to a handheld, resolve that second question before spending money. A product feature badge cannot answer every migration question.

PLAION’s current Metro 2033 Redux requirements list Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, DirectX 11 and 20 GB of available space. Minimum hardware is an Intel Core i5-4690 or Ryzen 3 1200, 4 GB RAM and a GTX 750 Ti 2 GB or Radeon R7 260X 2 GB. Recommended hardware rises to an i5-8600 or Ryzen 5 3600, 8 GB RAM and a GTX 1660 6 GB or Radeon RX 590 8 GB.
Those requirements do not specify a resolution or frame-rate target. Compare them with the machine you will actually use, not another PC on the same account. For installation planning, distinguish a stated storage requirement from the download shown by your launcher: do not treat 20 GB as a measured patch size or assume it covers both games together.
The sources reviewed do not settle every edition’s eligibility, PS4-save migration, trophy transfers or a complete Series S mode breakdown. We have not benchmarked the update. For a new playthrough, the documented improvements give existing owners a clear reason to check their library. For an unfinished campaign or an imported copy, confirmation of the relevant limitation matters more than downloading immediately.
